My question pertains to the setting "Caption (thumbs & captions link to WP Attachment Page)" - I was wondering if it was possible to use Photosmash's captions/custom fields on the resulting "attachment" page? Or is that hard-coded in Wordpress?

No, unfortunately, PhotoSmash can't tell what the PhotoSmash Image ID is by just being on the attachment page. If it could, you could use the [psmash id=##] shortcode to show particular fields (or a layout of fields for an image.
