Is there a way to have the Widget in the sidebar link to the attachment page of the image rather than directly to the full size image?

Try using this in the custom layout: [wp_attachment_link]
You should be able to tweak the Std_Widget layout (Layouts Editor) to get it to link to the attachment...I haven't tried it lately, so don't remember exactly how it works.
